The first amongst your Sabbaths shall this day beamong you, and ye shall afflict your souls. And this shall be an everlastingstatute unto you, to make an atonement for all the children of Israel from alltheir sins once a year." And again, in Leviticus XXIII: "And the Lordspoke unto Moses, saying, speak unto the children of Israel, and say, also onthe 10th day in this seventh month is the day of atonement; it shall be an holyconvocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls and offer aburnt-offering unto the Lord. And ye shall do no work in that same day, for itis a day of atonement, to atone for you before the Lord your God. And every onethat shall not be afflicted on that same day he shall be cut off from among hispeople. And every soul that does any work on that same day, that soul will Idestroy from among his people. You shall do no manner of work. This is astatute forever until all your generations and throughout all your dwellings. It shall be unto you the first amongst your Sabbaths, and ye shall afflict yoursouls; on the 9th day of the month (Visbri,) at even, shall ye afflict yoursouls; from even to even shall ye celebrate your Sabbath." When theIsraelites were still a nation, this day was observed with the most imposingceremonies. It was the only day throughout the year on which even the highpriest presumed to enter the holy of holies, or to pronounce the name of theDeity, which at any other time it was unlawful even for him to utter. Theglories of this day, while it was still celebrated in the place "which theLord had chosen there to enthrone his name," are, in these modern times, commemorated in the afternoon service at the synagogue. At present the day isobserved with no less fervor than of old, and the Jews throughout the world, however heedless of the precepts of their religion they may be occasionally, are all mindful of those which enjoin them to repent for the sins of the paston the Yom Kippur. At sunset the twenty-four hours' fast and continued prayerscommenced, the service consisting chiefly of confessions of sin and utterunworthiness. It is customary in the evening for parents to bestow theirbenediction on their children. Whosoever meet on the day, be they previouslyacquainted or complete strangers, are commanded to salute each other withbrotherly love and sincerity. If any quarrel exists between two Jews it isobligatory on them to become reconciled. He who is conscious of haying wrongedhis neighbor is bound to offer reparation. The law which ordains the observanceof the day likewise commands the Jew to afflict his soul, which affliction, according to tradition, consists in abstaining from five indulgences -- eatingand drinking, bathing, perfuming, wearing shoes and sharing the sensualpleasures. Yesterday the synagogues and many temporary places of worship werethronged with devout Israelites offering up their supplications, confessingtheir sins and imploring pardon.
